Since the Supreme Court is the Highest Court of Justice, and the final frontier after which no appeal is possible, Suri in his letter has urged that at least a two-judge Division Bench hears such pleas to ensure the satisfaction of litigants. Given that a Judge is also a human being, who is prone to human frailties, it is in the interest of justice that at least two judges look into pleas for bail brought before the Top Court, pleads Suri. “The Supreme Court is the final court and no appeal lies thereafter. The implementation of remedy by way of Curative Petition is also very rarely considered by the court. To keep the faith in the justice delivery system and satisfaction of the interest of the litigants, it is necessary that matter is heard at least by Division Bench. Each judge has his own philosophy based upon his life experiences, background and knowledge. Division Bench helps judges to interact with each other on all aspects of the matter and to decide collectively. At times difference of opinions leads to matter being heard by another bench I larger bench. This itself is an acknowledgement that judge is a human being and prone to human frailties”, states the letter. Suri goes on to rely on the practice followed by the Apex Court to conduct hearings through a Bench comprising of at least two judges. He emphasises that members of the Bar have always urged the Supreme Court to ensure that hearings are not conducted by a Single Judge Bench, and that Chief Justices have always paid heed to such suggestions. “For the last 70 years bar has been persuading Supreme Court not to allow single judge hearing. All the past Chief Justices every time have considered and found weight in this suggestion of the bar. It is requested that the well established practice of hearing being conducted by a division bench may not be departed from in the interest of justice and in the interest of faith that every one reposes in Hon’ble Supreme Court.” The Supreme Court commenced single-judge bench hearings from today, May 13, in certain matters, for the first time in 70 years after the decision was announced on the Court’s website on May 11. “The people of India have immense faith in Hon’ble Supreme Court and treat the same as a last frontier in their quest for fairness, independence and protection of their rights. The compliance with natural justice in letter and spirit is the condition precedent for building up the eco system of justice, fairness and swift action”, appealed Suri. Next Story
Boris Johnson, the Foreign Secretary, has cancelled a press conference which was due to be held in Keble College this afternoon.Johnson was due to speak alongside his German counterpart, Heiko Mass, but cancelled before the event to attend a Cabinet meeting on Syria.A spokesperson for the Foreign Office said: “The Foreign Secretary had to get back to London for the cabinet meeting.”Empty mic at Keble College, Oxford as Foreign Sec cancels meeting with German Foreign Minister to attend Syria Cabinet pic.twitter.com/ZZTwaZ4ntZ— Peter Henley (@Peter_Henley) April 12, 2018The two men had met earlier that day at Brize Norton airbase in Oxford and were due to speak together at the annual Königswinter Conference.FM @HeikoMaas meets @BorisJohnson: It is crucial that we closely coordinate our efforts regarding #Syria. pic.twitter.com/R28eE247Zv— GermanForeignOffice (@GermanyDiplo) April 12, 2018 After some speculation, Maas attended the conference alone saying that the Brexit vote has “made things more difficult” for Britain. The German Foreign Office told Cherwell: “The German Foreign Minister, Heiko Maas, stated in his press statement at Keble College, Oxford yesterday that Boris Johnson’s non-attendance was understandable and that they had enough time to discuss their topics at length.”German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas tells Oxford conference Brexit has “made things more difficult” for Britain over security issues but “we are not sitting in a corner shedding tears” pic.twitter.com/OaYSJnEFJp— Peter Henley (@Peter_Henley) April 12, 2018Earlier, the German Foreign Minister had said that Johnson would “have to make an effort” at the meeting to impress him as much as Irish Deputy Leader Simon Coveney.Johnson, who graduated from Balliol College in 1987, has caused controversy on previous trips to Oxford. In 2017 he was heckled by protestors when he attended a private party at Balliol, who held up a banner reading “Racist Boris, what dead animals have you fucked?”.Keble College and the German Foreign Office have been contacted for comment.
These protests came as part of climate strikes all across the UK, and the rest of the world. Thousands descended on central London to hear activists speak, as well as Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn who described himself as ‘absolutely delighted’ by the protests. This morning school students across Oxford and the surround area left class to march at another climate change strike held in the city centre. “It is a wonderful tie-in to all the other things which are happening around the planet at the same time”. In what was the city’s seventh Youth Strike 4 Climate event, hundreds gathered to make known their opposition to global pollution and widespread damage to the environment. Oxford MP Anneliese Dodds, MP for Oxford East, said: “I think it is really humbling to see a huge number of young people here today and they are very clear that we need to act now. We cannot keep putting action off”. Chris Church of Oxford Friends of the Earth said: “This is the largest environmental demonstration Oxford has ever seen. However, Education Secretary Gavin Williamson said “every child” should be in school. He added that “they should be learning, they shouldn’t be bunking off and it’s very irresponsible for people to encourage children to do so”. Demonstrations have been held in every continent, and millions are thought to have attended climate strike events across the world.
HOLCOMB MISSES MARK YET AGAINGregg Charges That Attacks In Holcomb’s New TV Ad Already Proven Falsewritten by Christina HaleINDIANAPOLIS –As Eric Holcomb struggles to put together a campaign, raise money and come up with any policy proposals, in his newest television spot he even struggles with the truth.“With no ideas or no vision to lead Indiana beyond the mess he helped create, Eric Holcomb is reverting to his old role as a party boss, attacking John Gregg with false claims and revised history,” said Tim Henderson, Gregg for Governor campaign manager. “This ad is another air ball from Eric Holcomb and reminds us that he’s just not prepared to serve as governor.”In the new television spot, ‘Best Yet to Come,’ Lt. Governor Holcomb charges John Gregg with poor fiscal management of the state when he served as Speaker of the Indiana House 14 years ago. These claims disregard the attacks of 9/11 and the economic turmoil they created, the fact that Republicans controlled the State Senate the entire time Gregg was Speaker and every bill that became law enjoyed bi-partisan support and John Gregg’s record of bi-partisan fiscal stewardship which garnered national recognition and praise.HOLCOMB FALSE ATTACK: ‘As Indiana House Speaker John Gregg helped turn a $2 billion surplus into a massive deficit.’FACT CHECKS:Ballotpedia’s Verbatim project called the attack charging a $1 billion deficit “misleading.”“In 1998, about a year-and-a-half after Gregg was elected Speaker of the House, Indiana was sitting on a $2 billion “combined reserves” surplus. Four years later, according to a March 2002 Deficit Management Plan, the state was facing a projected $1.2 billion operating deficit by the end of the 2001-2002 fiscal year—Gregg’s last full fiscal year as Speaker. However, this comparison is misleading. The claim juxtaposes an actual reserve “surplus” with a projected deficit. Instead of ending fiscal year 2002 with a $1.2 billion deficit, the state recorded a $534 million reserve balance.” [Ballotpedia “Verbatim,” 6/24/16]The Indianapolis Business Journal called a similar attack conducted earlier this year by the Republican Governor’s Association “pretty misleading.”“As for the content of the ad, Gregg did do some work for Enron through his law firm, but most lawmakers work in Indiana because the Legislature is part-time. But RGA’s attacks on Gregg’s fiscal record are pretty misleading. Through much of Gregg’s tenure as speaker, the state’s reserves were massive at 24 percent of state spending.” [Indianapolis Business Journal, 6/7/16]Gregg and then-Minority Leader Brian Bosma refused to pass tax restructuring without bipartisan support.“Finding the votes to raise some taxes, while lowering others, in an election year posed a major challenge. The House leadership — Democratic Speaker John Gregg and Republican Minority Leader Brian Bosma — announced that no tax package would pass their chamber unless it enjoyed bipartisan support.” [Governing Magazine, 2002]John Gregg won national award for shepherding bipartisan property tax relief plan through legislature.“The final product didn’t please anyone entirely, perhaps least of all Gregg and Bosma, who both voted “no.” But the pair was able to work together to pool what votes were needed to pass a bill that modernized a badly outmoded tax code. The two hugged emotionally when the vote was over. “I think John and I both realize,” Bosma says, “that while political position certainly plays a part in the legislative process, responsible adults have to bring the process to a responsible close for the benefit of those who are governed.”” [Governing Magazine, 2002]Gregg Supported A State Spending Cap.“Establishes a state spending cap. Establishes the rural development administration fund. Increases the riverboat admissions tax to $4 and the riverboat wagering tax rate to 22.5%.” (HB 1004)For more information on John Gregg, Christina Hale or their campaign, please visit www.greggforgovernor.com or call 317-510-1876.FacebookTwitterCopy LinkEmail
A man caught providing drugs to Bristol Prison has had his sentence increased after the Solicitor General, Robert Buckland QC MP, referred it to the Court of Appeal for being too low.Jason Weeks, 26, was stopped by police after CCTV caught him throwing drugs over the prison wall into the exercise yard from a vehicle. When searched, more drugs were found in the vehicle, as well as at Weeks’ home, where he was also growing cannabis.Between those drugs thrown into the prison, in the vehicle, and those found at his home, Weeks was responsible for over 1.5kg of cannabis and synthetic cannabinoids.Weeks was originally sentenced at Bristol Crown Court in May, where he was sentenced to 16 months’ imprisonment suspended for 24 months. Today, after the Solicitor General’s referral, the Court of Appeal increased his sentence to 15 months immediate custody, with the one month reduction due to recent progress he has made.Commenting on the imprisonment, the Solicitor General said:“Weeks risked seriously undermining the important role Bristol Prison plays in many of its inmates’ rehabilitation, in particular the work they do to address substance misuse. I am pleased that the Court of Appeal has today agreed to increase his sentence to show that crimes of this nature will not be tolerated.”

Quick – you have 140 characters to say something witty, include a link and disclose the fact that the company you’re tweeting about happened to give you a free sample of the product so you could give it a whirl. What do you do?The Word of Mouth Marketing Association says you should use #samp, one of three new hashtags it has adopted specifically for this purpose, which tells everyone you received a sample of what you’re tweeting about. The WOMMA released a set of guidelines this month in response to last months Federal Trade Commission adoption of a guide on endorsements and testimonials in advertising. According to WOMMA’s Social Media Marketing Disclosure Guide (.pdf), the FTC requires a disclosure of all “material connections”. It defines these connections as any connection that could “affect the credibility consumers give to that blogger’s statements.” The three hashtags that WOMMA is proposing are #spon for sponsored tweets, #paid for paid tweets and #samp for when the blogger received a sample. Depending on how you approach this, you can either use it as an AdBlock opportunity and make sure none of these sorts of tweets get through to you, you can go out and seek them, or you just be aware of what you’re clicking on and why it was suggested. We’re not sure we’d necessarily recommend filtering out these tweets, though. A quick search for #spon on Twitter revealed some great links. Remember, these are not necessarily just terrible ads, like you might be force fed on some website, they’re just tweets where the tweeter is disclosing the full background. As more and more people are getting paid to tweet, we hope these tags will make that more clear. With companies like McDonalds, Michelin, Dell and Porter Novelli using WOMMA guidelines, we’re willing to bet you’re about to start seeing these tags more and more. Rahul Dravid will continue as India A and under-19 coach for the next two years, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Friday. However, the former India captain had to step down as mentor of IPL side Delhi Daredevils but the board is expected him to compensate adequately.According to reports, there was a clause in Dravid’s contract which gave BCCI room to extend his contract if it found his performance satisfactory.
