first_imgMagheroarty PierIndependent TD Thomas Pringle and Cllr Micheal Cholm MacGiollaEaspuig have welcomed the news that Donegal County Council have applied to the Dept of Agriculture Food and Marine and Rionn na Gaeltacht for funding to carry out a study at Magheroarty Pier.‘Since the pier has been built there has been trouble with the build-up of sand at the pier affecting fishermen and the ferry to Tory Island. There are times that the pier could be left completely useless as a result’, said MacGiollaEaspuig.‘Donegal County Council has to regularly spend substantial amounts of money dredging to keep the pier in operation. This is expensive and means that environmental consents have to be secured each time that work needs to be done’ he says. According to Independent TD Thomas Pringle, this funding application, if granted, will allow all the statutory procedures to be completed to try and solve this problem once and for all.“We need these procedures to be carried out so we can fully understand the extent of situation and see how to go about solving it.‘The environmental impact assessment, wave studies, design and planning issues would all be examined through this process. Ultimately, we could end up with a design and a solution to the ongoing problem. While the cost may be substantial initially for the work, it will be cheaper in the long run when Donegal Council will not have to constantly fund dredging works,’ says Pringle.Pringle and MacGiollaEaspuig say they ‘would like to commend the work of the local committee in Magheroarty who have kept the pier high on the agenda and have pushed for this application for a long time. The task now is to try and secure the initial funding.
