first_imgchannelKolkata, Aug 23 (PTI) President Pranab Mukherjee today launched Akashvani Maitree radio service for Bengali listeners aimed at providing a platform for blending content from India and Bangladesh and preserving Bengali culture.”With this launch, a new chapter is being added in the India-Bangladesh relations,” Mukherjee said while launching the radio channel at the Rajbhavan here.”Akashvani Maitree and its multimedia website is a unique venture and initiative of All India Radio not only for the Bengali listeners in West Bengal, Bangladesh and the adjoining areas but the entire Bengali speaking diaspora living in different parts of the globe,” he said.Noting that India and Bangladesh are not just neighbours but are bound by an umbilical connection of ethnicity and kinship, the President said, “India always attaches highest importance to bilateral relations with Bangladesh because of our shared history, heritage, culture, language, physical proximity.”He said the two countries can together play an important role in the development and prosperity of the entire subcontinent and beyond. The concept of the channel emanates from the decision taken during the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Bangladesh where the two sides agreed to share content among their broadcasting organisations. The channel will be broadcast from a state-of-the-art brand new high power 1000Kw DRM transmitter with a capacity to reach the entire length and breadth of Bangladesh through medium wave and will be also available globally on its website and mobile app.Mukherjee said Akashvani has a special place in the heart of millions of people of Bangladesh since 1971 when the precursor to Akashvani Maitree, a special service in Bengali language was launched in the wake the Bangladesh Liberation movement.advertisementHe recalled that the channel had played a historic role during the liberation movement. He said the new channel can play a significant role in promoting and preserving the composite Bengali cultural heritage which is proud inheritance of all Bengali speaking people irrespective of their geographical location.”I am sure the blending of content from both India and Bangladesh in the fields if art, culture, literature, music, sports and also on shared socio-economic issues will make the channel a unique one,” he said, adding that it will be useful for listeners on both sides of the border. He also said India and Bangladesh can work together for further realising the full potential of the SAARC initiative. first_imgHappy Birthday Prithvi Shaw! Indian cricket’s boy-wonder has entered into his final teen year as he turns 19 today. The Mumbai batsman has been the talk of the cricketing globe ever since he was drafted into the Test team in the recent series against West Indies where he got an opportunity to show us a glimpse of the immense talent that he possesses.Shaw finished the two-match series on top of the run charts with 234 runs, which included a century and a half-century, and that was enough for him to earn the man-of-the-series award on debut.Don’t think any of us were even 10 per cent of what Prithvi Shaw is at 18: Virat KohliShaw’s rise has eased out some of the tensions in the Indian cricket team regarding the opener’s slot. Sure that it came against a timid West Indies attack in home conditions but the confidence with which he played and the maturity he showed is only a step ahead for Indian cricket.Just like coach Ravi Shastri said after the Windies series, “He is born to play cricket. He’s been playing since the age of 8 in the maidans of Mumbai, you can see all that hard work showing. He’s a spectator’s delight. There’s a bit of Sachin there, a bit of Viru in him and when he walks – there’s a bit of Lara as well.”Sky is the limit for Prithvi Shaw and Rishabh Pant: Sunil GavaskarHappy birthday to @PrithviShaw!The outrageously talented Indian youngster turns 19 today.Having scored 237 runs from his first two Tests, he’s made a brilliant start to his international career. pic.twitter.com/3Lp8qLVldEadvertisementICC (@ICC) November 9, 2018Comparisons with Tendulkar is something which Shaw must have gotten used to by now. In his debut match, Shaw scored a hundred to become the youngest Indian to score a hundred on Test debut, a record which even the Little Master never achieved. His performance against the Windies drew praise from all quarters with even the current world No. 1 batsman and Shaw’s captain, Virat Kohli going on to admit that, “Shaw looks like someone who can get you off to the kind of start that you require, especially to make the first mark in any series that you play. It’s great to have a guy who is so fearless, and he isn’t reckless, he’s very confident about his game.””I don’t think any of us were even 10 per cent of what he is at 18-19. But he has to build on that,” Kohli added. After the Test series Shaw took his international cricket form to the domestic circuit and scored another half century to take Mumbai to the Vijay Hazare final.During the semi-final Shaw was hit on the elbow but he still played in the final which Mumbai eventually won by 4 wickets against Delhi. He was again hit on the elbow during the Deodhar Trophy, where he was representing India ‘A’. He missed the Ranji Trophy opener as a result. But the Thane-born cricketer is slowly getting back to full fitness and if reports are to be believed, he is training with his idol Tendulkar and getting ready for the upcoming Australia Tests Down Under.Shaw was seen training with the help of Tendulkar along with his coach Prashant Shetty at the MIG Cricket Club in Mumbai, according to reports.Shaw will be going to New Zealand with the India A team where they will play a series of three unofficial Tests from November 16. Following which he will join the Indian Test side for the four-match series in Australia, which will determine whether Shaw is really ready for Test cricket or he still needs some time before getting used to the toughest form.Happy Birthday young @PrithviShawMay that willow work continue in the years to come #TeamIndia pic.twitter.com/M5qAgRUJGABCCI (@BCCI) November 9, 2018last_img read more

first_imgJuventus are willing to include Paulo Dybala in transfer negotiations with Manchester United as they aim to seal a deal for Romelu Lukaku.According to sources, United want €83 million (£76m/$93m) for the Belgian striker but there could well be movement on that price should the Red Devils be interested in adding Dybala to their squad.Juve head coach Maurizio Sarri wants Lukaku to be his main centre-forward heading into the 2019-20 campaign, with Cristiano Ronaldo being deployed on the left flank and Federico Bernardeschi on the right. Article continues below Editors’ Picks Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? Ox-rated! Dream night in Genk for Liverpool ace after injury nightmare Messi a man for all Champions League seasons – but will this really be Barcelona’s? That means that Dybala would have to settle for a rotation role similar to the one he had under former coach Massimiliano Allegri that saw his playing time reduced following Ronaldo’s blockbuster arrival from Real Madrid.Indeed, Ronaldo is capable of playing centrally and Mario Mandzukic would seemingly be ahead of Dybala in the pecking order in terms of a direct replacement for Lukaku, while Douglas Costa and Juan Cuadrado offer alternative options out wide. There is also the presence of Gonzalo Higuain, although Juve are looking to move on the 31-year-old should a suitable offer arrive. As revealed by Goal, Juve are ready to listen to offers for Dybala, while the club’s vice-predicent Pavel Nedved has confirmed there have been “some proposals”, with Tottenham having also been strongly linked. As for Inter, who have been linked with Lukaku throughout the summer and made no secret of their desire to take him to San Siro, they would have to resort to Plan B, should the former Everton striker not end up joining them.Romelu Lukaku Manchester United 2019-20Antonio Conte currently only has Lautaro Martinez as a recognised striker, with Mauro Icardi having been told he has no future with the Serie A club and having not taken part in any of their pre-season preparations to date.Edin Dzeko is another who is on Inter’s wanted list although, like Lukaku, there are complications in terms of negotiations, with Roma demanding €20m (£18m/$22m) or alternatively a transfer that would see Icardi swapped for the former Manchester City man, with the Nerazzurri expecting €30m (£28m/$33m) as part of that deal. The latter scenario would free up the necessary funds for Inter to go for Paris Saint-Germain forward Edinson Cavani, with the Ligue 1 champions demanding as much as €50m (£46m/$56m), and leave Conte with the two striker purchases he has been craving. As it stands, Dybala is ultimately proving key in a complicated transfer merry-go-round that could trigger as many as four transfers relating to Italy’s top flight.Dybala JuventusShould the Argentine be open to a move to Old Trafford, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward also agree to a deal, that would leave the path clear for Lukaku to make the switch to join Sarri’s Juve.United, meanwhile, continue to chase Leicester City centre-back Harry Maguire, while they have also been linked with midfielders Bruno Fernandes and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.Paul Pogba is looking increasingly likely to stay at the club, meanwhile, with Real Madrid’s hopes of landing the Frenchman fading amid the Red Devils’ reluctance to open negotiations amid fears they won’t have enough time to sign a suitable replacement.Lukaku is, however, one member of the United squad that looks almost certain to leave and the Belgian, who has played no part in pre-season, teased a possible exit as he posed for a photo with agent Federico Pastorello and captioned the image “soon to be continued”.last_img read more

These capital expenditures will be invested across the province, with significant dollars spent on Highway 103 twinning andupgrading, as well as preparatory work on the continued twinningof Highway 101 and Highway 104. On Highway 125, the province expects to continue with twinningefforts and this year plans to widen the Sydney River bridge andreplace the Coxheath Road overpass. Trunk 7 will continue to be upgraded and repaved as part of afive-year, $17 million program. Nova Scotians will also continue to see old steel truss bridgesreplaced with modern structures as part of a five-year $50million bridge replacement program. Last year, the departmentcompleted reconstruction of the Seal Island and Margaree Harbourbridges. Work on 10 more bridges across the province wasannounced last fall. More money for capital work is only part of the province’sincreased funding for the 4Rs: resurfacing, restoration, rehabilitation and reconstruction. More money will be spent onlocal road maintenance under the Road Improvement Money Program.A total of $12.5 million will be invested in local roads acrossthe province, an increase of $2.5 million. This will result inimproved road shoulders and ditches, as well as asphalt patchingand gravel upgrading. Overall, provincial spending on roads and bridges will exceed thedollars collected in provincial motive fuel taxes. The provincewill spend about $260 million on our roads and bridges this yearand collect about $254 million in provincial motive fuel taxes. The province will continue to lobby the federal government forstable long-term funding to support highway construction in NovaScotia. The federal government collects about $140 million a yearin motive fuel taxes in Nova Scotia and, over the last fiveyears, returned less than $5.5 million a year to maintain ourroads and bridges. The cash-strapped company became the first domestic airliner to go into bankruptcy after the Mumbai bench of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) admitted an insolvency petition filed by SBI on behalf of 26 lenders on June 20. “Pursuant to an order dated June 20, 2019 of NCLT Mumbai Bench, Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP) has been initiated for Jet Airways (India) as per the provisions of Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016,” Jet Airways said in a regulatory filing Sunday. Jet Airways owes more than Rs 8,000 crore to banks, and thousands of crores more in arrears to vendors, lessors and employees. The airline formally stopped flying on April 17 and banks voted for bankruptcy on June 17. The NCLT bench comprising VP Singh and Ravikumar Duraisamy set a 90-day deadline to resolution professional Ashish Chhauchharia of Grant Thornton to conclude the resolution process, even though the bankruptcy law allows 180 days for the same, saying “the matter is of national importance.” The bench also instructed the resolution professional to file fortnightly progress report and submit the first such report on July 5 when it will begin to hear the matter again.last_img read more

first_imgOTTAWA — Four federal leaders will take the stage in Montreal tonight for the first debate to feature Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau.Conservative Andrew Scheer, New Democrat Jagmeet Singh, and Yves-Francois Blanchet of the Bloc Quebecois will face off with Trudeau at 8 p.m. Eastern time, in a debate hosted by the private TVA television network and the Montreal newspaper Le Journal.“It’s enormously important,” says Maclean’s Ottawa Bureau Chief John Geddes of the French debate, adding with 78 seats up for grabs in Quebec, the outcome could have a big impact. The Liberals are polling well in the province, which makes Trudeau the target in his first test against his competitors, and his main rival Andrew Scheer.“I think inevitably they’re the top dogs, and this whole thing of Scheer versus Trudeau will be key.”The other leaders all stand to gain by taking Trudeau down a notch on topics like pipelines, deficit spending, and Quebec’s controversial religous symbols ban for public workers.Any great performance or big mistake can sway the Quebec race, and since the Liberals and Conservatives are in a dead heat nationally, every vote matters.“For sure picking up a few seats or losing a few seats in Quebec could make the difference if you’re in that tight a race,” Geddes says. The leaders are spending most of the day Wednesday preparing, though the Liberals have a campaign announcement featuring cabinet minister Navdeep Bains in Toronto and the Tories have one planned with Scheer’s Quebec lieutenant Alain Rayes in Montreal.Trudeau is planning a visit to a boxing gym for a photo op, and Singh is going on a walkabout at a market, ostensibly to buy snacks for his preparation team. The organizers didn’t invite Green Leader Elizabeth May or the People’s Party’s Maxime Bernier, both of whom are campaigning in and around their home ridings for the day.Tonight’s debate is the first of three where Trudeau will take part, with two more next week organized by the new federal debate commission headed by former governor general David Johnston. Geddes says at the very least, tonight’s showdown will be a preview bout ahead of those debates.Trudeau didn’t attend a debate hosted by Maclean’s magazine and Citytv at the very outset of the campaign that’s now half over, and the organizers of a debate on foreign policy cancelled their event when Trudeau wouldn’t appear there, either. All four of the leaders debating tonight will likely be hoping for moments that change the momentum of the 21-day-old campaign, with polls showing hardly any change in voters’ preferences since it began on Sept. 11.The Liberals and Conservatives remain locked in a fight for first place, hovering around 33-per-cent support nationally but with the Liberals apparently having a small edge because so much Conservative support is concentrated in the Prairie provinces. A strong Liberal showing in Quebec, where polls show them with a small but consequential lead, could sustain the Liberals in power; a strong Conservative showing could sink them. The New Democrats remain well back, slightly ahead of the Greens in most polls. Without May on the stage, Singh will have a chance to sell himself to Quebecers in the hope of starting a new “orange wave” in the province.last_img read more

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) today announced plans to transfer some 2,000 Iranian Kurdish refugees from an insecure camp in central Iraq to a more stable location in the north. The serious incidents at Al Tash camp near Ramadi, including armed men in the vicinity of the camp, three refugee deaths, two kidnappings, frequent water shortages and interrupted electricity, have made life extremely difficult for the refugees and has also made visits by aid agencies to the camp extremely sporadic due to its insecure status, UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) spokesperson Ron Redmond told a press briefing in Geneva. Many of the Iranian-Kurd refugees will be relocated to the Kawa site in the Erbil Governorate, which will have water, sanitation, electricity, schools and health care facilities, until a more permanent camp site is constructed. After the fall of Saddam Hussein, thousands of Iranian Kurds who were living in the Al Tash camp for more than 20 years following the Islamic revolution in Iran decided to leave of their own accord, and the 2,000 still there are the last remaining occupants. Some of those who left moved to the Sulaymaniyah region with relocation assistance from local authorities, UNHCR and others. read more

first_imgTHE NUMBER OF reported rapes in Delhi has doubled in the past year, while the number of reported sexual assaults has quadrupled.ActionAid is calling for 23,000 rape cases in India to be fast-tracked, as we move closer to the anniversary of Jyoti Singh, known as Nirbhaya.Nirbhaya was brutally gang-raped on a bus in Delhi on 16 December 2012 and died of her injuries 12 days later. The four men accused of her rape and death were found guilty and sentenced to death in September 2013. This case was fast tracked in response to the protests, other rape trials in India can take years to complete.Director of ActionAid in India, Sehjo Singh, said:The extremely low conviction rates send out a signal to perpetrators that they are free to act with impunity and can deter women from reporting rape and other crimes of sexual violenceThe international development agency also warns that it’s unclear whether the increase in numbers of rapes and sexual assaults is because the number of cases has risen or that woman “feel more able to report cases since the protests and huge publicity surrounding Nirbhaya’s death.”Sehjo Singh believes that “the number of reported cases does not reflect the true number of cases of rape and sexual assault”. He added:This is particularly true for marginalised groups like the Dalits who are often threatened not to report cases either by powerful castes or even by police. The organisation are calling for measures to be put in place to help women in India who have been attacked. Some of the measures they are calling for include:The police to be trained to deal with cases of sexual violenceA 24-hour helpline for rape survivorsA ban on traumatic vaginal examsAn end to political interference in sex crime casesMore judges to deal with India’s slow legal systemTo mark the first anniversary of Nirbhaya’s death, ActionAid is supporting a week-long campaign against violence against women in India.A rally will be held on 16 December that will follow the route of Nirbhaya’s fatal bus journey.Lawyer of Delhi gang-rape accused denies smearing victim>Suspect in Delhi gang-rape trial found dead in prison>last_img read more

first_imgO’Rourke, second from top (photo via Sportresult)Updated 20.10IRELAND’S DERVAL O’ROURKE missed a medal by an agonising one-hundredth of a second at the European Indoor Championships this evening.O’Rourke ran a season’s best time of 7.95 seconds in the 60m hurdles final, but it was only good enough for fourth as she was pipped to the podium by Alina Talay of Belarus and Veronica Borsi of Italy. Both Talay and Borsi were timed at 7.94 seconds for silver and bronze, with all three athletes separated by the tiniest of margins in a photo finish.Gold went to reigning European 100m hurdles champion Nevin Yanit of Turkey who set a new national record with a European leading time of 7.89 seconds. It would have been a fifth major championship medal for O’Rourke, 31, who was crowned world champion over 60m indoors in Moscow in 2006.Her narrow defeat was a rare moment of disappointment on an otherwise excellent day for the Irish squad in Gothenburg, which saw four athletes win their first-round races.Brian Gregan, the fastest man over 400m in Europe so far this year, was sharp as he won his heat and cruised into tomorrow’s semi-finals in 46.97. The Dubliner, who was sixth fastest overall, returns to the track at 4.45pm Irish time tomorrow. There was more success in the men’s 3,000m as Ciaran O’Lionaird continued his flying start to the season by winning the slower of this afternoon’s two semi-finals in 7:55.12. The Cork native now has a chance to add Ireland’s first medal of the championships when he goes in the final at 5.20pm tomorrow. But there was disappointment for Stephen Scullion and John Travers, both of whom missed out on qualification. Scullion finished eighth behind O’Lionaird in 8:00.78 while Travers, who led the second semi final after the first lap, trailed off to finish last in 8:23.83.In the women’s 800m, it was double delight as both Rose-Anne Galligan and Ciara Everard won their heats to qualify for the semis. Galligan was fifth fastest overall in 2:03.62 while Everard’s marginally slower time of 2:04.33 was the seventh. The two have avoided each other in the draw for tomorrow’s semis which begin from 4.30pm.Claire Tarplee, who finished fourth in her 1500m heat in 4:15.16, missed out on a place in the semi-finals while Tori Pena crashed out of the pole vault after she failed three attempts at 4.36m.Indoor Championships: Gregan dominates 400m heatIndoor Championships: Ó Lionáird continues return to the toplast_img read more

first_imgTHE IRISH PENAL Reform Trust (IPRT) has said that Travellers coming from prison need a dedicated strategy to stop them re-offending.The IPRT says in a new report, Travellers in the Irish Prison System: A qualitative study, that effective ethnic monitoring in prisons, a dedicated strategy for Travellers in the criminal justice system, and targeted reintegration supports are needed to support Traveller prisoners to escape the cycle of exclusion and offending behaviour. The report finds that Travellers are disproportionately represented in the Irish prison system, a trend found in other countries with an indigenous minority ethnic population.Underlying factors, the report says, include poverty; social and educational disadvantage; racial discrimination; literacy problems; mental health problems; and drug and alcohol dependency.Discrimination carries on into prisons, the report found, where staff and other prisoners compound problems with literacy and mental health. On release, Travellers experience problems in accessing housing and estrangement from their communities.Deirdre Malone, Executive Director of IPRT said that the report was “overdue”.One of the key recommendations to emerge from our research is for the Irish Prison Service to develop an equality policy for all minority groups in prison, including Travellers, and to put in place a dedicated strategy for Travellers to ensure that prison does not further compound the social marginalisation that is often at the root of offending behaviour.Read: New Children’s Minister doesn’t support Traveller ethnicityRead: How does a lack of oversight within an Garda Síochána affect Travellers?last_img read more

first_imgYour 3TB drive is pretty sweet, but it’d be so much more awesome if it was a 6TB, right? You bet. And TDK says it’s got a way to make that happen. That could be important very soon, as some industry insiders think that hard drive manufacturers only have one or two generations left before they hit a wall when it comes to storage capacities on magnetic media. The problem is the supermagnetic limit, which says that the maximum density for perpendicular recording is about 1TB per square inch. We’re already at 667MB, so the wall is approaching quickly.TDK’s solution utilizes heat-assisted magnetic recording, or HAMR. And since it’s packed into a hard drive’s read/write head, we can slap the awesome moniker HAMR head on the tech. TDK claims its head can double hard drive capacities — so theoretically, a 1TB 2.5″ Toshiba drive could be boosted to 2TB with only minimal changes.HAMR relies on recording platters with a high coercivity. They’re able to pack information in more tightly than current platters but they need to be heated before they’re able to write data, which TDK does using a small laser in the drive head. Seagate demonstrated a similar technology back in 2009.While SSDs are becoming more widely used and their cost per gigabyte has dropped dramatically over the past year or so, we’ve still got a long way to go before flash-based drives supplant traditional hard drives. For housing massive amounts of data at bargain-basement prices, hard drives will continue to be the storage medium of choice.TDK has said that it plans to begin mass-producing drives with these increased capacities by late next year, so that 6TB drive I mused about at the start of this post might not be as far off as we think. I’m putting one on my wish list for next Christmas.More at The Registerlast_img read more
