first_imgOTTAWA — Four federal leaders will take the stage in Montreal tonight for the first debate to feature Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau.Conservative Andrew Scheer, New Democrat Jagmeet Singh, and Yves-Francois Blanchet of the Bloc Quebecois will face off with Trudeau at 8 p.m. Eastern time, in a debate hosted by the private TVA television network and the Montreal newspaper Le Journal.“It’s enormously important,” says Maclean’s Ottawa Bureau Chief John Geddes of the French debate, adding with 78 seats up for grabs in Quebec, the outcome could have a big impact. The Liberals are polling well in the province, which makes Trudeau the target in his first test against his competitors, and his main rival Andrew Scheer.“I think inevitably they’re the top dogs, and this whole thing of Scheer versus Trudeau will be key.”The other leaders all stand to gain by taking Trudeau down a notch on topics like pipelines, deficit spending, and Quebec’s controversial religous symbols ban for public workers.Any great performance or big mistake can sway the Quebec race, and since the Liberals and Conservatives are in a dead heat nationally, every vote matters.“For sure picking up a few seats or losing a few seats in Quebec could make the difference if you’re in that tight a race,” Geddes says. The leaders are spending most of the day Wednesday preparing, though the Liberals have a campaign announcement featuring cabinet minister Navdeep Bains in Toronto and the Tories have one planned with Scheer’s Quebec lieutenant Alain Rayes in Montreal.Trudeau is planning a visit to a boxing gym for a photo op, and Singh is going on a walkabout at a market, ostensibly to buy snacks for his preparation team. The organizers didn’t invite Green Leader Elizabeth May or the People’s Party’s Maxime Bernier, both of whom are campaigning in and around their home ridings for the day.Tonight’s debate is the first of three where Trudeau will take part, with two more next week organized by the new federal debate commission headed by former governor general David Johnston. Geddes says at the very least, tonight’s showdown will be a preview bout ahead of those debates.Trudeau didn’t attend a debate hosted by Maclean’s magazine and Citytv at the very outset of the campaign that’s now half over, and the organizers of a debate on foreign policy cancelled their event when Trudeau wouldn’t appear there, either. All four of the leaders debating tonight will likely be hoping for moments that change the momentum of the 21-day-old campaign, with polls showing hardly any change in voters’ preferences since it began on Sept. 11.The Liberals and Conservatives remain locked in a fight for first place, hovering around 33-per-cent support nationally but with the Liberals apparently having a small edge because so much Conservative support is concentrated in the Prairie provinces. A strong Liberal showing in Quebec, where polls show them with a small but consequential lead, could sustain the Liberals in power; a strong Conservative showing could sink them. The New Democrats remain well back, slightly ahead of the Greens in most polls. Without May on the stage, Singh will have a chance to sell himself to Quebecers in the hope of starting a new “orange wave” in the province.last_img read more

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) today announced plans to transfer some 2,000 Iranian Kurdish refugees from an insecure camp in central Iraq to a more stable location in the north. The serious incidents at Al Tash camp near Ramadi, including armed men in the vicinity of the camp, three refugee deaths, two kidnappings, frequent water shortages and interrupted electricity, have made life extremely difficult for the refugees and has also made visits by aid agencies to the camp extremely sporadic due to its insecure status, UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) spokesperson Ron Redmond told a press briefing in Geneva. Many of the Iranian-Kurd refugees will be relocated to the Kawa site in the Erbil Governorate, which will have water, sanitation, electricity, schools and health care facilities, until a more permanent camp site is constructed. After the fall of Saddam Hussein, thousands of Iranian Kurds who were living in the Al Tash camp for more than 20 years following the Islamic revolution in Iran decided to leave of their own accord, and the 2,000 still there are the last remaining occupants. Some of those who left moved to the Sulaymaniyah region with relocation assistance from local authorities, UNHCR and others. read more

The runner-up in last year’s World Chess Championship also qualifies. and two American grandmasters have qualified: Fabiano Caruana and Wesley So. The winner will go on to play for the World Chess Championship, the game’s pinnacle title, and the probability that it will be either Caruana or So is about 30 percent. An American hasn’t won a world championship since Bobby Fischer did in 1972.The Candidates Tournament, a 14-game double round robin, will take place March 10-28 in Berlin. The winner challenges the reigning world champion and world No. 1, Magnus Carlsen of Norway, in a one-on-one, 12-game match for the title later next year. (The date and location of that match have not yet been announced.) Carlsen successfully defended his title in a tense match last year in New York City; he’s been world champion since 2013.Who is likely to be next to challenge the champ? The Dubliner, who was sixth fastest overall, returns to the track at 4.45pm Irish time tomorrow. There was more success in the men’s 3,000m as Ciaran O’Lionaird continued his flying start to the season by winning the slower of this afternoon’s two semi-finals in 7:55.12. The Cork native now has a chance to add Ireland’s first medal of the championships when he goes in the final at 5.20pm tomorrow. But there was disappointment for Stephen Scullion and John Travers, both of whom missed out on qualification. Scullion finished eighth behind O’Lionaird in 8:00.78 while Travers, who led the second semi final after the first lap, trailed off to finish last in 8:23.83.In the women’s 800m, it was double delight as both Rose-Anne Galligan and Ciara Everard won their heats to qualify for the semis. Galligan was fifth fastest overall in 2:03.62 while Everard’s marginally slower time of 2:04.33 was the seventh. The two have avoided each other in the draw for tomorrow’s semis which begin from 4.30pm.Claire Tarplee, who finished fourth in her 1500m heat in 4:15.16, missed out on a place in the semi-finals while Tori Pena crashed out of the pole vault after she failed three attempts at 4.36m.Indoor Championships: Gregan dominates 400m heatIndoor Championships: Ó Lionáird continues return to the toplast_img read more

first_imgYour 3TB drive is pretty sweet, but it’d be so much more awesome if it was a 6TB, right? You bet. And TDK says it’s got a way to make that happen. That could be important very soon, as some industry insiders think that hard drive manufacturers only have one or two generations left before they hit a wall when it comes to storage capacities on magnetic media. The problem is the supermagnetic limit, which says that the maximum density for perpendicular recording is about 1TB per square inch. We’re already at 667MB, so the wall is approaching quickly.TDK’s solution utilizes heat-assisted magnetic recording, or HAMR. And since it’s packed into a hard drive’s read/write head, we can slap the awesome moniker HAMR head on the tech. TDK claims its head can double hard drive capacities — so theoretically, a 1TB 2.5″ Toshiba drive could be boosted to 2TB with only minimal changes.HAMR relies on recording platters with a high coercivity. They’re able to pack information in more tightly than current platters but they need to be heated before they’re able to write data, which TDK does using a small laser in the drive head. Seagate demonstrated a similar technology back in 2009.While SSDs are becoming more widely used and their cost per gigabyte has dropped dramatically over the past year or so, we’ve still got a long way to go before flash-based drives supplant traditional hard drives. For housing massive amounts of data at bargain-basement prices, hard drives will continue to be the storage medium of choice.TDK has said that it plans to begin mass-producing drives with these increased capacities by late next year, so that 6TB drive I mused about at the start of this post might not be as far off as we think. I’m putting one on my wish list for next Christmas.More at The Registerlast_img read more

first_imgRussian President and presidential candidate Vladimir Putin meets with other candidates in the poll, a day after the presidential election, at the Kremlin in Moscow on Monday. Photo: AFPVladimir Putin on Monday said he would address disputes with the West after an election that saw him return to the Kremlin with a record vote share, as Moscow faces increasing isolation.International leaders were slow to congratulate the Russian president after a Sunday election that saw him take almost 77 percent of the vote, as monitors reported ballot stuffing and other alleged cases of fraud. The poisoning of an ex-spy in Britain along with fresh sanctions from Washington over allegations of meddling in the US 2016 election have isolated Moscow to an extent not seen since the Cold War.The president, who has ruled Russia for almost two decades, on Monday denied he was driving a new arms race with Washington after he unveiled a range of “invincible” nuclear weapons this month.“From our side, we will do all we can so that the disputes with our (international) partners be resolved by political and diplomatic means,” he said during a meeting with the seven other candidates he resoundingly defeated on Sunday.“It goes without saying that not everything depends on us—as with love, both sides have to be involved, otherwise there can be no love at all,” he said.Putin said he would focus on “increasing the well-being of the residents of this country” through investments in healthcare, education and infrastructure during his next term.Carrot and stickWith Putin’s most vocal opponent Alexei Navalny barred from running for legal reasons, the outcome of the weekend election was never in doubt, and most of the suspense lay in how many people would turn out to vote. The Kremlin pushed for high participation to give greater legitimacy to a fourth term for Putin, who is already Russia’s longest-serving leader since Joseph Stalin. But Navalny called on supporters to boycott the vote and sent out more than 30,000 monitors to voting stations.Navalny’s movement and the non-governmental election monitor Golos reported ballot stuffing, repeat voting and Putin supporters being bussed into polling stations en masse.Fewer irregularities were reported than in previous years, however. An OSCE observer mission said that although the election was marred by a lack of “genuine competition”, it was generally well conducted.Authorities used both the carrot and the stick to boost engagement in the polls.Selfie competitions, giveaways, food festivals and children’s entertainers were laid on at polling stations to entice voters. But employees at state and private companies, as well as students, said they had come under other pressure to vote.‘Modernising Russia’Analysts said Putin used tensions with the West to rally support and suggested that armed with a strong new mandate, he could push through further punitive measures against dissenters.Putin’s campaign spokesman Andrei Kondrashov said that turnout, which was above 67 per cent, was eight to 10 percentage points higher than expected. He claimed that was “thanks to Britain.”London this month implicated Putin in the poisoning of former double agent Sergei Skripal in England with a Soviet-designed nerve agent. Most of the voters AFP spoke to said they had backed Putin despite Russia’s problems of poverty and poor healthcare, praising his foreign policies.Muted Western reactionsWestern leaders were slow to publicly acknowledge Putin’s landslide win.German chancellor Angela Merkel “warmly congratulated” Putin while stressing in a message she wrote the need to continue dialogue “to address important bilateral and international challenges and find viable solutions.”French president Emmanuel Macron wished Vladimir Putin success in “modernising Russia” after his re-election, but urged Moscow to shed light on the “unacceptable” attempted assassination of an ex-spy in Britain.Macron also expressed concern over the war in Syria, in which Moscow plays a key role as the regime’s closest ally, in a carefully-worded statement that steered clear of congratulating Putin directly.Citing a report by independent observers, Britain’s Foreign Office on Tuesday noted “restrictions on fundamental freedoms… resulted in a lack of genuine competition in the election”.And 24 hours after the election, there has been no public comment from US president Donald Trump.Japanese prime minister Shinzo called Putin to congratulate him on his victory as did Chinese President Xi Jinping, who has just gained a path to indefinite rule.Grim moodAmong liberal Russians the mood was grim.“Have you been thinking about emigrating for a long time? This really is the ideal moment,” remarked Stanislav Kucher, a journalist for Kommersant FM radio.Putin polled well ahead of his nearest rival Pavel Grudinin, the Communist Party candidate, who described the elections as “dishonest”.With 99.84 per cent of ballots counted, Grudinin had secured 11.8 per cent.Ultra-nationalist Vladimir Zhirinovsky took 5.66 per cent, former reality TV presenter Ksenia Sobchak was on 1.67 per cent, while veteran liberal politician Grigory Yavlinsky received just over one percent of the vote.last_img read more

first_imgIn work that may help solar panels become a more viable source of mainstream power, a research group has created a dye-based solar cell with a high efficiency and high stability, and that lacks the volatile chemicals used in similar cells. This is a combination so far lacking in the newest solar-cell prototypes. The group, including researchers from the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, was studying a new type of solar cell that is being widely researched across the globe, one made of bendy, low-cost, lightweight organic materials rather than rigid, pricey, and often heavy inorganic materials. “We have uncovered new findings on old solar-cell materials and created high-performance cells,” said Peng Wang, a researcher in the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry and the study’s corresponding scientist, to PhysOrg.com.The type of organic solar cell Wang and his colleagues improved contains three key parts. The first two components are a semiconductor, such as silicon, and an electrolytic liquid—a conducting solution commonly formed by dissolving a salt in a solvent liquid, such as water. The semiconductor and electrolyte work in tandem to split the closely-bound electron-hole pairs produced when sunlight hits the cell, called excitons (holes are positively charged electron vacancies). The third component is the source of these photo-induced charge carriers, a photosensitive dye that gives the solar cells their name: “dye-sensitized,” with the most common dye being iodide. In addition, a nanomaterial is also often used to hold the dye molecules in place like a scaffold. The highest efficiency solar cell ever made is dye-sensitized, with an efficiency of 11 percent, meaning 11 percent of the solar energy is converted to electrical energy (compared to 8.2 percent achieved by Wang and his group). But the highest efficiency dye-sensitized cells also contain volatile solvents in their electrolytes that can permeate across plastic (i.e. organic compounds) and also present problems for sealing the cells. Cells that contain these solvents are therefore unattractive for outdoor use due to potential environmental hazards. So while they perform well, they have serious drawbacks.Researchers have developed solar cells that use solvent-free electrolytes, but the cell efficiencies are too low.The cell developed by Wang and his group avoids these issues using a “formulation” they developed. To create their electrolyte, they took three solid salts and mixed them to form a “fascinating” liquid, says Wang. The resulting electrolyte has an impressive conductivity as well as the favorable stability properties of all three salts.”The performance of our solar cell now matches that of cells that use volatile solvents,” said Wang. “This is an important step toward the production of large-scale outdoor dye-sensitized solar cells.”Citation: Yu Bai, Yiming Cao, Jing Zhang, Mingkui Wang, Renzhi Li, Peng Wang, Shaik M. From tomorrow onwards, which can lessen future production.Lalu after all has been one of the finest practitioner of realpolitik in all its intent and purposes and has been the most commanding figure in Bihar politics for the last 25 years He would know that an act of this nature would only infuriate the BJP top brass If at all they had any role to play in the raids conducted against him on Tuesday then action against him by the Income Tax Department ED and other such agencies would only get further intensified Though some reports suggest that Lalu was unaware of his party men attack on the BJP office but in a highly-controlled party like the RJD such an audacious move is not possible without a clear nod or instruction from one of the lead members of the Lalu Yadav-Rabri Devi family By doing this Lalu or some other member of family is hurting Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s ‘Sushashan Babu’ (governance man) image Nitish’s biggest USP was his administration’s ability to maintain law and order in the state Now if Nitish acts against the RJD men and puts them behind bars for rioting at BJP office he will earn the wrath of his friend-turned-foe-turned-friend Lalu and will be accused by him of playing in BJP’s hand If he fails to act he would be accused of turning a blind eye to his alliance partner’s condemnable act of violence to remain in power An hour before the incident a senior JD(U) leader told Firstpost how RJD had been restrained in its actions since Tuesday (after the news of Income Tax raids against Lalu poured in) just because Nitish was at the helm in the state Had there been any other chief minister given the attitude of the RJD leaders and workers the state would have been in turmoil The JD(U) leader was mistaken He couldn’t have estimated the RJD’s game plan Nitish and Lalu may be alliance partners but sources in both the parties have indicated their discomfort with their ally Nitish is not willing to be on Lalu’s leash particularly on issues concerning his image but Lalu and his men don’t miss an opportunity to let people know that RJD was the biggest component in the ruling Mahagathbandhan (RJD- JD(U) and Congress) and that it was not Nitish Kumar government but it was Nitish-Tejashwi Yadav government The events of the past fortnight —the Supreme Court order in Rs 900-crore fodder scam a series of well-documented revelations on Lalu and his family acquiring landed properties in Bihar Delhi and elsewhere and alleged fictitious transactions through shell companies —have changed the power dynamics in Bihar All these allegations against Lalu and his family have created a situation where it has become important that RJD remains in power in Bihar Lalu’s dependence on Nitish has increased Lalu can’t afford to be out of power in these difficult times But then Lalu can’t be seen to surrendering to Nitish and if things come to a breaking point in the future he can’t let the latter get away with an untarnished image The JD(U) on its part is closely watching the unfolding situation Nitish has directed his party men not to talk to media over issues relating to Lalu and family’s properties and the I-T raids "What do we have to say How do we know how Lalu his sons and daughter acquired prime properties in Bihar and outside We can’t be seen defending his misdeeds Nitish ji can’t sully his image for Lalu" a JD(U) leader said Nitish’s remarks to media on Tuesday after the raids was cryptic: "You say raids have been conducted at 22 places but why are you not showing all those places" For now Nitish is showing his prudence through his patience He does not want to take any step in haste There is a belief in his party that corruption cases don’t impact political fortune of leaders with a solid caste base but that is no longer valid —Mayawati and Mulayam Singh-Akhilesh Yadav decimation in UP is taken as a shining example of the changed political norm Then there is an argument that when Lalu was charged in the fodder scam case there was nothing on the ground that could reflect his corrupt practices The latest revelations pictures of under construction mall palatial houses and farm houses in Delhi and the Income Tax raids at various locations have changed that scenario Lalu’s hidden wealth at least a portion of it is now on display to people and that could change popular perception even among his core support base of Yadav-Muslim The bravado of attacking BJP office in Patna too would not go down well Thanks to the follies of his partner Nitish Kumar has to do a tight rope walk A news editor with Malayalam daily Mathrubhumi Vinod Chandran and his wife Saritha were brutally assaulted by a group of robbers who barged into their house in Kerala’s Kannur district Representational image AFP The incident according to The News Minute’s report happened at the Thazhe Chovva area of the district during early hours of Thursday?"FLOTUS spox confirms Mrs. 2016.
